Why do the Atlanta Technology Angels invest?

September 27, 2007 · 2 Comments

In preparation for my talk on ”Fundraising Fundamentals” at ATDC  on October 3rd at 12:00….

1.) To create wealth and a positive return for their personal investment–a basic expectation of investing.

1a.) To create wealth and business experience for local GA-based entrepreneurs.

2.) To attract additional “outside” institutional capital to the state of Georgia

This is more important than ever. In 1999, Atlanta had 11 venture capital related funds. In 2007, we are down to 1. ATA has invested approximately $25,000,000 into 40 companies in the Georgia market since 1999. We have helped bring in an additional $300,000,000 to those companies in later stage funding from 20 venture capital funds in 12 different states.

3.) ATA members want to give back to the community that which they have gained:

Operational experience, Wealth and Success.

4.) ATA members want to stay involved in the technology community.

Self-explanatory.

5.) Control over their own investment.

Most ATA members are not content to hand over their capital to a money manager or a GP at a VC/PE/Hedge fund. Most are  interested in “actively” investing within the community. We consider ATA a “working” investment group–so the fit is perfect.

Along the lines of #4, some people become angels to be involved in something they are passionate about. What are your passions? What company, if you could create any fictional one, would you love to see walk through ATA’s doors?

    Hi Blake–
I thought it was fairly evident that ATA members are passionate about “technology” and the Atlanta market. We’ve specifically identified those sectors as important to us as a group and as individuals.
I’d love to see a company whose technology was developed in Atlanta and who could grow and become a world class company–and make a lot of investors and founders successful and wealthy!
